William was born in Montgomery County, Alabama in October of 1854. His father apparently died sometime before 1860 because the 1860 Census shows his mother Mary living with her second husband William W. Winfield. William's stepfather joined the Alabama Cavalry in 1862 and fought in the Civil War (see his Confederate Military Record). So, William having lost his biological father early in childhood had to wait for his stepfather to come back after the war. William W. Winfield then died after 1867 but before 1880. William also was living with his half-brother Lee Winfield (b. 1865) and a half-sister Eunice Winfield (b. 1867) along with a cousin, Henry Swint (b. 1864).

About 1881 William married Eldridge Josephine McMillin and started to have children. In June of 1900 Eldridge and William were living in Pine Level, Al., so I assume Eldridge moved there to be with William at the time of the marriage. William rented land on which he had a farm and their many children worked for them there. William died April 13, 1914.

William's grandson James L. Rhodes was the famed "Dusty" Rhodes that played for the New York Giants and hit two home runs in the 1954 World Series.
