My Mother, Katie Elizabeth Reynolds, his granddaughter, recalls his wife Emily, her grandmother, stating that Volney studied Medicine 2 years sometime prior to his marriage. Emily was visiting a relative, Sim Hobbie, who lived near Cantalow Hill, off Old Selma Road, and met Volney. They later married and moved to Pike Road where Volney farmed. By this time four sons had been born, and all of the family suffered from fevers and various illnesses. They decided a move was in order. Emily owned property at LeGrand and Ada. Volney bought a piece of property near hers and built a lovely home there. The house had a large porch across the entire front which was always referred to as the colonnade. It’s large square columns probably prompted this. The garden was landscaped by Volney’s brother, Benjamin Franklin [Noble]. Boxwood borders, Magnolia, Cape Jasemine and Laurel, as well as other shrubs were used in abundance. The house was demolished about twenty-five years ago (it was in very good condition and could have been beautifully restored, but the new owners wanted a new and modern home) Some of the trees and shrubs are still standing.
