Mary Winfield
Born: 1832 in South Carolina
Died: after 1880 in Montgomery County, Al.
Father: Unknown
Mother: Unknown
Married: First an Unknown Rhodes probably in Montgomery County, Al. and then William W. Winfield in Montgomery County, Al.
Children: George Rhodes (b. 1853), William Benjamin Rhodes (b. 1854), Jonathan Rhodes (b. 1858), James Rhodes (b. 1863?), Lee Winfield (b. 1865), Eunice Winfield (b. 1867),
I have not been able to determine Mary Winfield's maiden name as yet though it is almost certainly either Shaw, Cannon, or Swint. The 1880 census lists her nephew, Henry Swint (b. 1864) at her residence in Pine Level. There were two Swint families living in Pine Level at this time, both only a few houses over from the Winfield-Rhodes family. One was Lee R. Swint whose spouse was Naemie Shaw and the other David D. Swint whose spouse was Martha Cannon.
According to the 1860 U.S. Census Mary Winfield was born in 1832 in South Carolina. She married an Unknown Rhodes sometime before 1853 probably in Montgomery County, Al. It is my guess that her husband died before 1860 because the Census shows Mary living with her second husband William W. Winfield by that time. Mary had at least four children with Mr. Rhodes, being George, William Benjamin, Jonathan, and James. George had moved out of the house by 1880 and lived close by with his own family.
Mary's second husband William W. Winfield joined the 51st Alabama Cavalry in 1862 and fought in the Civil War (see his Confederate Military Record). William came back from the war and had two children with Mary being Lee Winfield (b. 1865) and Eunice Winfield (b. 1867). William W. Winfield then died after 1867 but before 1880. The 1880 shows the family as still living in Pine Level. Mary died sometime after 1880.
